Undue Burden the real cost of living with wolves

Killing cattle is a crime report it as Eco Terrorism to the FBI

Several times this year, and in past years of heavy livestock depredation, in the vicinity of the Mexican wolf reintroduction area, cattle have been shot alongside roads.  The problem became especially vicious when the lethal control of the Durango Alpha female took place in July.  One cow was shot with a high powered assault rifle.  Killing cows that belong to someone else is criminal and brutal.  It is also considered eco terrorism.  Now,a print shop in Santa Fe is printing T shirts and other items that advocate cow killing over the Mexican wolf program.

If you have had any cattle shot alongside the road please do not chalk it up to just kids messing around.  Please report it to the proper authorities and ask that they notify the FBI.  thanks Admin

Roadside shooter sought in deaths of cows, deer
Ranchers say shots being fired from light-colored sedan

    THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Someone is shooting and killing cows and deer from a car along west Marin County’s back roads, furious ranchers and agriculture leaders said Wednesday.
A small, light-colored sedan pulled up to a fence line along Chileno Valley Road late Monday afternoon. Someone inside fired several rounds into a mother cow standing by the fence.

The occupants, maybe three or four young men, gave a yell and drove off, said rancher John Goldbeck, who was nearby feeding his cows.

“It’s definitely a bad deal. We need to put a stop to it right this minute,” said Goldbeck, a fourth generation rancher.

This week’s shooting was the third cow shot in the past few weeks, according to ranchers, who say three deer carcasses also have been found in the area from gunshots.

Admin : I recieved this email directly from the person who wrote it, apparently thinking our website would be interested in posting his wares.   If you would like to see the products he has designed, please use his link and try to be polite we don’t advocate rudeness even to this type of person.  Catron county should sue this person for liabel as he is outright stating the county shot the Durango pack, someone in the county and or, ranchers did something to them.

The only shooting of the Durango pack done by the citizens of Catron co was done with a video camers and available on this site. This Casio person has a right to say and think what he likes, but not to make unsubstantiated accusations or advocate criminal behavior. admin

“Catron County, New Mexico has apparently decided to take the law into its own hands and deal with what they perceive to be their “wolf problem”. Recently, it has been reported that the Durango Wolf Pack, a three member pack, in the Gila has disappeared. Two of them had radio collars. Neither appear to be functioning. The collars should continue to transmit even if the wolf is dead.

“Of course it’s suspicious,” said Laura Schneberger, president of the Gila Livestock Growers Association. But, she said, “None of us had anything to do with it.”

For a great article on Catron County and its attitude to OUR public lands, please read the article in the Albuquerque Journal by Michael J. Robinson of the Center For Biological Diversity. (http://www.abqjournal.com/opinion/guest_columns/550232opinion03-28-07.htm)

The ranchers seem to think the wolves will kill every cow they own. Nothing could be further from the truth. The actual number of cattle lost to wolves is so small that the National Agricultural Statistics Service doesn’t even list wolves as their own category, grouping them instead under “Other Predators.” This category was only responsible for 0.65 percent of total cattle loss in New Mexico and 0.21 percent in Arizona in 2005. More than 40 times more cattle are lost to respiratory problems in the Southwest than to “Other Predators.” (Info from www.chihuahuandesert.org)

Since the reintroduction program began, 26 wolves have been killed by poaching. To say what is happening in Catron County is pissing me off, is an understatement. The ranchers act like the wolves are raping and pillaging their way across the county. No cattle, pets, children or wives seem to be safe from those fiendish, murderous wolves.

So what can I do about this? Aside from supporting pro-wolf organizations and speaking out on this issue whenever I can, one really good thing I can do is advertise the issue. Get it out and around so people of New Mexico and beyond will awaken out of their entertainment media-induced comas and get them to care about this desecration to OUR public lands, a rapidly disappearing magnificent wild animal and Catron County thumbing its nose in America’s collective face and saying “Screw You!”

I offer these t-shirts, bumperstickers, etc. as a way for you to express your outrage at what is going on . . . and if you aren’t outraged, you are, in fact, not paying attention.

    Thanks

    Gary Cascio

      Dear Mr. Cascio:
As you are aware we all have freedom of speech, but come on, you are inciting violence. Cows are living creatures and have a right in this eco system too. Your hatred or your anger should not tell people to commit a crime and an act of cruelty towards the cattle.
I do not believe you know all that much about the wolves; Catron County; or what is really going on in the wolf re-introduction, as you are trying to project. It is not a matter of the wolves killing cattle, it is the system has lied and does not do or has not done what it said it would. Cattle are not the only thing being killed by wolves. Horses, pets; elk calves and although not the Mexican Grey wolves, wolves have killed people. Just because things are not recorded or documented does not mean it has not happened. We (people) are not out in the woods everywhere to know the exact number of elk; dogs; horses; cattle etc that are killed by wolves. I even heard of a camper in Arizona who “was” pro wolf, a wolf in Arizona came right to their trailer and attacked the dog, who was in their camp site with them right there. The wolves did not fear man enough to be afraid to walk right into the camp site. Wolves not fearing man (humans) are dangerous to both.
They [wolves] do not know what they are killing, they eat what they can catch, and sometimes kill for sport, and after all they are a canine.
It is easy for someone in Santa Fe, who probably never uses the Forest or Public lands to make opinions without having any hands on actual experience with it all. What has been written in the Albq Journal and the Alibi etc are very one sided and accuse ranchers of being out there shooting wolves. Well they [ranchers] are not that stupid to bring that trouble onto themselves. There are lots of people that use the Forest and Public Lands that do not want wolves out there. If ranchers wanted to kill wolves, they would have done it in the very beginning when they could have taken them out before they bred. NOT ALL RANCHERS are against the wolves. Ranchers know their will be depredation and that is a risk. You forget, or you don’t even know, ranchers were the ones that helped Defenders of Wildlife fund and get this off the ground in the Gila. However, the lies and the program heads not holding up to their promises of what they tell everyone, and twisting things around is the problem. Ranchers are not killing the wolves. More than likely it is hunters that make money off hunting and the elk populations are declining fast in the Gila and in other states within the USA. That is documented proof. So I ask you to please stop this hatred and know what the program is; and what it is doing before you buy into this hatred. The majority of Ranchers love the environment and the wildlife in it. It is the administration of the re-introduction program and not upholding their guidelines that is the problem. Ranchers are working with them. Most hunters I have met have no clue as to he laws of the program, what the consequences are if they kill a wolf, besides they probably think ” no body will suspect me, they will think the rancher did it” which is what is happening. If the re-introduction area is expanded to where hey wish to do so, south of I-40 and North of I-10, who will you blame then. I ask, as a lover of bovines (I have some pet cattle) and canines, and wildlife, as well as my freedom to live as I wish, as long as I am not hurting other people or animals, to stop this hatred, don’t buy into the propaganda and hatred the newspapers and the eco terrorists are breeding. I would assume you are a reasonable man, but do not know the entire story. I invite you to be enlightened. Just let me know when. I may even call you. Thanks for having the “huevos” to post your name.
