Wolf Impacts On People: Studies and Reports

Papers on wolf attacks.
The reason wolf attacks are not prevalent on the North American Continent until recently is becuase, historically wolves were not habituated to humans as they are now. The following documents are evidence that we have been a long time making the mess we are finding ourselves in.

Why are Mexican wolves behaving the way that they are? The following documentation was available prior to rulemaking that occurred in 1998 however, due to corruption in the wolf biology field, this information was not used in determining how to deal with inbreeding that had resulted in severe birth defects that caused infertility in the certified lineage. So, arbitrarily and capriciously with aforethought and malice, members of the former wolf recovery team chose to use two lineages with hybrid dogs as founders. This has been a blatant violation of the ESA and our wolf program has been paying the price, not to mention the people who are forced to live with a protected habituated hybrid wolf.
It is certainly unfortunate that the federal district courts have allowed this wolf to be certified as a pure Mexican wolf. Otherwise there would be no Mexican Wolf program.

Diseases including rabies in wolves

This has been a travesty, no reasonable affective management of wolves has occurred in NM. The people have had to tolorate their pets being killed, their livestock slaughtered, their children being put at terrible risk and the sanctity of their homes are being violated by dangerous animals. Meanwhile FWS is fiddling while Rome burns.
At last, the Commission has been able to intervene! We are finally getting support from the Albuquerque media. Maybe liberals in the city will become better informed and more empathetic towards the plight of rural Americans across the country. We applaud those who have worked so tirelessly and at such great sacrifice of personal time and finances. Special thanks to Alex Thal, Nick Ashcroft, The Catron Countly Commissioners, Gila Livestock Growers, the Schnebergers, NM Rural American Alliance and so many, many others working behind the scenes.
The really frightening thing above and beyond the complete indifference shown by agencies and their “environmental ” supporters to the real impacts, is the power their PR has to completely over-ride reality in the eyes of the public. It seems that their clever spin can eclipse the actual cultural genocide of a very sustainable generational existance.
The horrible, dangerous and gruesone day to day reality being allowed and encouraged here should cause any thoughtful person to wonder what the consequences of this “acceptable” behavior of blind and callous indifferance to human welfare will be like when it hits their neighborhood. This sort of unacceptable mentality should not be allowed to continue setting precedent.
All I have to say is if the wolve’s start killing here around Carrizozo,NM they will be getting killed themselve’s. I’m not going to walk out and found my horses and dog’s dead cause of the wolve’s.
I am so shocked that the Aspen pack breeding is more important than a horses life or even the little girl this alpha almost attacked. If the public really knew what was going on in their national forests and to the residents living near by they would be shocked.
I would agree the spin is intresting … but they have no pictures. You guys had done a great job with your diaries, pictures and other documentation. My hat is off to all of you.
I BELIEVE THERE IS ROOM FOR BOTH OF US-WOLVES AND HOMOSAPIENS. THESE LARGE PREDATORS ARE NEAR THE APEX OF THEIR WORLD AND WHEN WE VENTURE INTO IT WE NEED TO SEE THROUGH THEIR EYES AND BEHAVIOR. TO NEEDLESSLY SCREAM AND BEAT OUR DRUMS THROUGH LACK OF KNOWLEDGE IS SENSELESS. I STRONGLY SUSPECT HORSES WERE A PART OF THE WOLVES’ PREY CHAIN LONG BEFORE WE ARRIVED. AFTER ALL-LIFE DOES INDEED FEED UPON LIFE IN THE ETERNAL ASCENSION OF ALL SPECIES.
I apprecate that you are thinking about this issue and its impact.
I believe there is room to but not in my backyard! Not eating my horses, dogs, harassing my children. I doubt you would be ok if they were constantly in your backyard. Why are they there?
You see wolves do not stay in the wilderness when there is not the prey base to sustain them. Many biologists that left the program said the prey base was not there to support these wolves. Many of the current Northern Wolf Biologists stated that we did not have the wilderness or the prey base necessary to support these wolves. Please review the map of the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area.
BRWRA Map Remember our communities retirement and otherwise are dotted throughout this map.
Humans are also part of wolves prey base. Is that ok too?
As for horses, they were not part of the prey base in the New World until the Spanish introduced the horse. While there are some fossil records that may conclude that the modern horse was here in the New World prior to Spanish introduction that has not been proven. Mustang means feral horse in Spanish.
But if you think this is ok for wolves to prey on our beloved horses. Please consider helping pay the Millers for their horse Six. He was worth over 5000 and they were compensated only 2500. If there really is any compensation for loosing a beloved partner.
How about I take your car and only give you a $100 for it. You were compensated, what I thought was a fair value so that should be good enough. Right? Would you be bothered?
That is what is going on here. It is not ok. To get compesation all your evidence is perfect and you get credit for the kill. Could you take a 50% pay cut on your business or paycheck? That is what the business have gone through here. It has greatly effected our tax base. Intrested in donating a bit to help out?
If you do not think so I can set you up and you can visit what is really going on. I know I am egging you on a bit but you are justifying why killing my horse is OK. It is not.
My horses have been around lion and bear and with the wolf they do not even have a fair chance.
I agree we need to understand how they kill and that they do. Wolves slow their prey down and just start eating. If you think they are merciful killers check out this blog story.
Please check out the pictures our children have to see stuff like this and we cannot protect them from this kind of violence. Was this deer’s suffering nice? Do you really think this was OK? Was this a fair way to die?
Dispelling the Myth
Little Doe Suffers through Wolf Attack
What about the elk in Idaho some left alive with their fetus eaten out of them by wolves. This is how they do kill. How would this make you feel to see your horse or cow or dog looking like this?
elk photos click here
They did not even eat the elk just left them to bleed out.
My horses are worth even more. How about ponying up with the cash and a little elbow grease in helping to do the burring necessary? Have you ever burried a 1200 pound horse…I have. How do you get a hole dug when the ground is frozen or their is a few feet of snow?
Even our Governors’ horse would be worth more than the $2500 capped compensation.
What has been proven is that these wolves are interbreeding with dogs and coyote so there is no way to preserve their endangered gene pool with them out their courting someone’s boarder collie.
You see this is not even good for this wolf to be out here running around. It is sad when they kill one after they teach them to do bad things. They have set these wolves up for failure. Plus wolves will ways disperse into more urban areas just like coyotes have done…they are just biger and have more of an impact than coyotes.
Please read what is really going on here…if it was you or your 4 legged family members would this be ok? If you were the one loosing out emotionality and financially would that be ok?
I am sorry to say you are misled.
Please read what Smokey the Bear knew about wolves or better know as the “Study of the Wolf Program US Fish & Wildlife Does Not Want You To See”
Most people who like the idea of mexican wolf recovery here don’t realize that, essentially, we don’t have a wolf recovery area here. There is no equating what is happening here to a WILD recovery in the sense of peopleless wilderness.
JUST LIKE IN URBAN AREAS this land is already fully pre-utilized by a culture which has achieved its own balance and includes humans as a keystone enabler of natural abundance. Thousands of years of HUMAN stewardship, balance and beauty producing synergy on a scale that is grossly misunderstood, and whose removal can only greatly degrade all the “pristine” diverse beauty here.
It’s easy to see how other cultures, urban and alien to the earth ironically mistake the natural beauty here as the result of protecting the land from humans. The truth is the traditional cultures, here unlike the consumptive, foreign to the earth lifestyles of urbanites, actually do enhance their landscape. They have traditionally been responsible for the beautiful and abundant Ponderosa Pine forests now almost destroyed in a few decades by misunderstanding of the need for right human livelihood and stewardship here to maintain abundance.
As Ed Bangs of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery says there are very real concerns about the very real impacts wolves have on real people here. It’s a unique and difficult situation actually created by those who imposed a recovery program on a landscape that does not have a recovery “core refugia”. Somewhat like authorizing airplanes to land, or wolves to prowl in an area already cheek to jowl filled with urban communities. That is really all you need to know to understand why there is so much trouble and conflict. It is not lack of sensitivity by the humans that are an essential part of this world that is the core problem here.
This “program” seems to be of quite questionable mentality in its origins. Grey wolf experts outside the “program” are certain it can never work. These ungulate dependant communities and counties, to whom this whole land is historically part and parcel of their existance cannot, no matter how they cope, survive this situation without gross endangerment and uncompensated loss to all. These people and the
wolves are real the victims here.
Sanity and logic prevailing this desert wolf dumped in the middle of, not the WILD, but a alpine forest like, naturally human fulfilled eden would never have happened. Why didn’t they introduce them at White Sands where they would have a traditional habitat and a core area not already utilized by humans, free from human conflict? Was this a case of lack of wisdom or is this abuse of humans and wolves merely the preordained intended consequences of some twisted misantropic mentality.
David,
Where in New York City do you live??
LOL
I think Grizzly Bears in NY Time Square would be nice they could eat all the do noting politicans we voted in office. Put all the Wolves in The back yards of all the Defendors of Wildlife and Endangered Spieces Act people that way they can protect and feed them the way they should be taken care of, since they say the Wolf dont attack humans they can make house pets out of them.
When is Enough going to be Enough, The Spotted Owl, The Grouse in Wyoming, the Wolf along the Arizona and New Mexico border and the Wolf in Idaho,,,
Are they going to bring back the Mule Deer that use to be here in AZ. NM. in large numbers, that was when our predators were kept thinned down.
Are they going to bring back the Buffalo to? they use to be here in large numbers.
Are they going to bring back Charles Manson he use to be in Ca.
What about the dinasaures they use to be here to.
You folks are doing a great job getting the truth out. But you are dealing with city people that think meat is made in the Supermarket. There are clueless and believe the big lie that wolves only kill for food. Anyone that study predators will tell that predators when given the chance will sports kill for the fun of it. They also will teach their young how to kill, so many animals will die in this teaching process. When the first child is attacked all these folks that support the wolf programs needs to be sue for big bucks. But the real plan is cleanse the rural area of Americans and herd us into the new reservation.
The Endangered Spieces Act, Defendors of Wildlife, and all Fish and wild life Agencies, and everyone that had anything to do with the Wolf Dumping Programs should have a building where they can be held accountable for the all the bad that will come from this stupid Idea who ever dreamed it up in the first place.
The wall that is being built along old Mexico and the US border is to keep the real Americans fleeing to Old Mexico when they continue to destroy our constituition and country. Our rights are slowly being taken away how ever you want to look at it, I dont know how they got the Wolf Dumped here along the AZ NM border in the first place. I have not talked to anyone that ever got a chance to vote on it here.
But like I have said before there isnt enough for all the predators to eat now, the wolf will not make it in 2007 unless the agencies start raising sheep or livestock for the wolf to eat.
we are in the start of getting the news out here in upper michigan where the department of natural resources say the wolf just migrated back here from northern minnesota “wrong the wolves were released twice with the first release being a failure and the second was hush hush, any how to the point the wolves are decimating our once productive deer hunting which was a bounty for local and state coffers,we have a do nothing DNR which is 2 years behind delisting the wolf and a population that is spraling out of control as admitted in their own report that basically says we don’t know what the right number is and have to research more? these are supposed to be trained biologist and paid a salary to get the numbers right not just research while pets are eaten, livestock is killed and economic prosperity is slaughtered, today 12-23-07 cnn news reports of joggers being attacked in alaska at least 3 times by these dangerous animals an fws and the dnr need more research, their needs to be resounding voice of sanity that says this is the number allowed and the rest are open hunting because there is no predator above the wolf except man!!!! we took these animals out of our lives for a reason, they are a dangerous predator that if left unchecked ,unrestricted, and unmanaged will eat themselves out of house and home. for more info look to isle royal michigan where the wolf and moose have lived on and island for years, the moose population grows so does the wolfs then when the wolves overpopulate they crash the moose herd and the wolves starve to death starting the cycle over again, but when wolves co-habitate near or around man guess where they turn, even i’m not that stupid nor is the wolf, if you have a pet dog look deep into their eyes, ” your just looked into the eyes of history and the past” heres your new wolf domesticated thru time but allow them to run unchecked ,unregulated, and unrestricted and what do you get? a wild dog pack that will eventually if left alone would return to their base gene pool of the wolf, mark the words of someone who lives and hunts in the north woods, sooner or later their will be a modern day wolf attack on a child or hunter or jogger etc in the lower forty 48 and then how do you compensate a human life?
small pox was eraticated because it did no one any good. thus its the same with the wolf.
should we reintroduce small pox because it isnt as common anymore and because someone says they miss it and dont want to see it go extinct.
small pox is gone and i dont miss it, do you miss it. its one less thing i have to worry about.
the wolf needs to be hunted until it is a threat to NO ONE.
the real indangered species is the God fearing, gun owning, constitution loving American.
David,
Amen to that.
Surprised by this website. Just back from Minnesota where there are 3,000 –5,000 wolves. Went on a trip to howl for them, saw bears and eagles, too. Many parents with little kids on the wolf tracking tour. The attitude is totally different up there.
Cougars would be more of a worry to people–so the primary concern is wildlife/livestock. When this issue gets resolved in some way(if we put a man on the moon, why can’t we learn to live w/ wildlife, etc.) There are tens of thousanfds of deer in MN as well as a huge dairy industry; the deer are the key. Less deer here means more wolf conflict w/ cattle, etc.
My own neighborhood has a zillion coyotes, a few bears and cougars.
Hi Anne, thanks for writing. I believe some of the studies listed on the page are from the North Eastern programs. We are different down here and don’t seem to have the prey base or core habitat for these wolves and these are different animals alltogether having been pen raised and now managed in a manner that allows habituation to be fostered.
Livestock / wildlife is a major concern here as well but we are also seeing some severe wolf human problems that are being thwarted fairly regularly.
A lot of things are different here hence this website and the need to educate folks on the management issues we face.
